For entertainment and self-reflection: Vela is an astrology app. Astrology is not science, and nothing Vela shows you is a prediction of real events or a statement of fact about your life. Vela does not provide medical, psychological, legal, or financial advice, and must never be used in place of a qualified professional.
Vela is designed around a simple principle: your birth data belongs on your device, not on our servers. Vela has no user accounts and no server-side database of your personal information. Your name, birth date, birth time, and birth place — along with every chart, saved person, and reading Vela generates — are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. We do not have a copy of this data, and we cannot see it.
All chart mathematics happens on your device. Vela computes planetary positions, house cusps, aspects, and transits locally using a real astronomical ephemeris. No part of that calculation requires a network connection, and your birth data is not sent anywhere in order to draw your chart.
Our backend is a stateless AI proxy and nothing more. It has no database of users, charts, or readings. When Vela generates an interpretation, only the computed chart facts for that request are sent to our server, forwarded to our AI provider, and the response is returned to your device. Requests are held in an in-process cache for up to 24 hours purely to avoid duplicate AI calls, and that cache is wiped whenever the server restarts.
The following categories of data are collected and stored exclusively on your device:
Vela's written interpretations are generated by a large language model. The chart mathematics is not done by the model: Vela computes every placement, aspect, house cusp, and transit on your device with an astronomical ephemeris, and sends the model only a structured block of those already-computed facts to interpret in words. The model is explicitly instructed never to calculate or invent a placement.
When you request a reading, the following is sent to our proxy and on to our AI provider:
We do not send your name, your birth place name, your birth date or birth time, or any account identifier (Vela has no accounts). AI processing is performed by OpenAI (model: gpt-4o-mini) via our backend proxy. Nothing you send is stored server-side beyond the short-lived, in-memory cache described above. Every AI response is filtered before it is shown to you; if a response fails that filter, it is discarded rather than displayed, and Vela shows a plain factual summary of your transits instead.
Vela uses analytics to understand product usage and measure funnels, and (with your permission) to attribute installs. This may include your device identifier (IDFA), and Vela requests App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission before this identifier is used for tracking. If you decline the ATT prompt, your device is not tracked for advertising purposes. Analytics data does not include your birth data, your charts, or your readings.
We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or to prevent fraud or protect the security of our service. Because we do not store your personal data server-side, there is generally nothing for us to disclose beyond the limited analytics and transient AI-proxy data described above.
Because Vela stores your personal data on your device and not on our servers, you already have direct control over it:
Residents of the EEA/UK (GDPR) and California (CCPA/CPRA) have additional rights regarding personal data. Given that we hold no server-side copy of your personal data, most such requests are satisfied directly on your device; for anything else, contact us at the address below.
Vela is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will address it.
Your data is protected by iOS's built-in device encryption and app sandboxing. Network requests to our proxy use HTTPS. Because we maintain no server-side store of your personal data, there is no central database of user birth data to breach.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via an in-app notification. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
