Not affiliated with USCIS: Oathly is an independent study and interview-practice tool for the US naturalization civics, reading, and writing tests. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or any other government agency, and using it does not guarantee any outcome in your actual interview.

How Oathly Handles Your Data

Oathly is designed around a simple principle: your study data belongs on your device, not on our servers. Oathly has no user accounts and no server-side database of your progress, answers, or personal information. All question history, mastery tracking, mock-interview sessions, and profile details (such as your ZIP code, used only to look up the correct local officials) are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. We do not have a copy of this data.

Our backend is a stateless AI proxy for two narrow features: grading a spoken answer's meaning against the official list of acceptable answers, and generating brief, generic small-talk lines for the practice interview's opening. Requests are held in an in-process cache for up to 24 hours purely to avoid duplicate AI calls, and that cache is wiped whenever the server restarts. We do not maintain a database of your requests or their contents.

Information We Collect

Study Data (On-Device Only)

The following categories of data are collected and stored exclusively on your device, and are never transmitted to our servers except as described below:

Oathly's naturalization interview asks about sensitive personal history — for example, travel dates, employment, arrests, or affiliations. Oathly never asks you these questions and never collects, stores, transmits, or processes this kind of eligibility information anywhere in the app or on our servers. Nothing in Oathly resembles or requests Form N-400 Part 9-style content.

Spoken Answers (Grading)

When you answer a practice question by voice, your device's speech recognition converts your speech to text entirely using Apple's on-device or system speech APIs. If the transcript doesn't obviously match a known correct answer, the transcript text — along with the question id and the list of officially acceptable answers for that question — is sent to our backend, which asks an AI model to judge whether the meaning matches. The transcript text is processed for that one grading request only. It is not stored in a database, is not logged, and is not associated with you or your device in any persistent way. It exists in our transient in-memory cache for at most 24 hours (to avoid re-grading an identical request) before being discarded, and that cache is wiped on every server restart.

Audio itself is never sent to our servers — only text transcripts already produced on your device.

Small-Talk Generation

The optional mock N-400 simulation can generate a few warm, generic opening pleasantries in the style of an interviewing officer. If you choose to personalize this, your first name, country of origin, and/or occupation may be sent to our backend to generate the lines. These lines are always small talk — the prompt we send to the AI model is explicitly forbidden from asking about or referencing immigration history, arrests, taxes, or travel. This data is processed for that one request only, held in the same transient 24-hour cache, and is never stored in a database.

Civics Content, Officials, and ZIP-District Data

Oathly periodically fetches public, non-personal content updates from our backend — the civics question bank, a table of current elected officials, and a ZIP-code-to-state lookup table. These requests carry no personal data and require no account or API key; they are the same for every user.

Analytics and Device Identifiers

Oathly may use standard mobile analytics (such as Firebase Analytics) to understand feature usage and measure funnels. Analytics data does not include your study data, spoken transcripts, or any personally identifying information.

How We Share Your Information

Third-Party Service Providers

Legal and Safety

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or to prevent fraud or protect the security of our service. Because we do not store your study data or spoken transcripts server-side, there is generally nothing for us to disclose beyond the limited transient data described above.

Data Retention

Your Privacy Rights

Access, Correction, and Deletion

Because your study data lives entirely on your device and we keep no server-side copy, you already have full access to it inside the app, and you can correct or delete any entry directly in Oathly. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data. If you have used a voice-grading or small-talk feature, that specific request may still exist in our transient cache for up to 24 hours before it is automatically discarded; you do not need to contact us for this to happen, but you may email us with questions at .

Third-Party SDKs and Services

International Data Transfers

Oathly is operated in the United States. Any data sent to our grading or small-talk features is processed in the US. If you are located outside the US, by using these features you consent to the transfer of that limited data to the US for processing under US law.

Security

We implement reasonable security measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), to protect any data that is sent to our AI proxy. However, no security measure is 100% guaranteed. If you have security concerns, please contact us at .

Children's Privacy

Oathly is a general-audience app and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children. Oathly has no accounts, so there is no account-based data collection from any user, child or adult.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy at any time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date above and, if required by law, via an in-app notification.
